Sourav Ganguly retires : The BCCI scheme

Sourav Ganguly, the prince of kolkatta, the god of offside and the first aggressive leader of Indian Cricket will finally bid goodbye to International cricket in the Border Gavaskar Trophy. This post is not dedicated for praising his achievements, but a closer look at the BCCI retirement scheme. Last one year has been particularly tough for Ganguly and he will get the benifit of retiring early (earlier than his mates, sachin and dravid) in terms of good media deals. BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) which was playing the role of Bad Boss for the last two years has given DADA a chance to redeem himself and get out of cricket gracefully (Rather than being thrown out). Being trhown out of the Indian squad regularly was humiliating for Ganguly, a fact he accepted when he said,"I was tired of being humiliated again and again". This is even tougher for a more aggressive person.

The more corporate BCCI has forged out a nice retirement scheme : Retire Gracefully Scheme for Elders (RGSE)

The next ones to be given (forcefully) this scheme are Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar. I don't think Sourav Ganguly has willingly taken this decision. It seems to me as part of a contract which says " You can play this series only if you announce you retirement ". I am not in favour of any such methods but I feel such decision, whether forecefull or not will help evolve a new platform for the ones who are raring to make a mark on the future of Indian Cricket.

2 Reactions:

  1. When i got to know about his retirement, i was very very deeply disappointed.

I was very much disappointed. More than disappointment, i was frustrated to the core.
    Why ?

Because, Sourav did not quit cricket, just because he is 36 years old or for any other reason.
But, as you said, due to sheer humuliation from the selection committee, he had to quit.

I just cannot understand one thing.
When Sourav Ganguly does not perform well, he will be immediately dropped from the team.

But on the contrary, when other players does not perform well, why are they still in the team ?

If i am not wrong, Mahendra Singh Dhoni is the only cricketer who has been performing consistently from the past 1 year or so.

Apart from him, nobody else has performed.
    But still, DADA is targeted.

He was not picked for the Irani Trophy.
Why ? Just because he did not perform well in 1 single series against SriLanka?
To say honestly, no other player had performed well in that series.

I guess Sourav was not dropped based on his performance.

He was dropped, for reasons "other than cricket".

Whatever it is, if you look at his statistics as a player, do you think he should be dropped ?

Isn't there any respect for a senior player ?
He has done so much for the team, which has made the whole of India swell with pride.

But, the people in selection committee, does whatever they feel.

    Injustice is ruling the world.
And great players like DADA are paying the price for that.

But, certainly, i feel DADA should not have announced his retirement.
We need his service for the team.

There is still so much to say about DADA, but i am so disappointed, that i am not even able to type. So, I would like to say 1 last thing finally-- WE WILL NEVER EVER GET A PLAYER LIKE SOURAV GANGULY AGAIN IN THE HISTORY OF CRICKET. NEITHER WAS A PLAYER LIKE HIM, NOR WILL BE A PLAYER LIKE DADA. IF THERE IS ANY TRUE CRICKETER IN THIS WORLD WITH THE REAL GUTS AND ATTITUDE, THEN IT IS ONE AND ONLY " SOURAV GANGULY", "PRINCE OF KOLKATA", "BENGAL TIGER", "DADA" and nobody else.

I wish all the Good Luck to DADA in his future life.
    WE MISS YOU DADA............

  2. Manishankar Ray, Kolkata- a die- hard fan of Dada!Nov 12, 2008 05:09 AM

Sourav - THE ROYAL BENGAL TIGER.
He is locally known as Dada in India as well as in abroad. In his 13 year old career, he had to overcome many hurdles. He is India's most successful captain of all time. He has been dropped many times but he had made some brilliant comeback after that. He is a stylish and talented left-handed batsan.

He is gifted with a brilliant talent to play against spinners. Sourav had been involved with many controversies. But he fought them bravely. It is our discredit that a great player like him retired when he had a lot cricket left in him!!!!!!

Long Live for Sourav and his excellent cricket..........
